Costa Rica, renowned for its environmental leadership, faced COVID-19-related setbacks, leaving many initiatives incomplete. FUNDECOR, an ecological consultancy group, is fighting to reinvigorate environmental efforts focusing on the environmental certification “Programa Bandera Azul Ecologica.” This project supported these efforts in two ways. Firstly, addressing instrumentation gaps by creating two carbon footprint calculators. Second, the team created three presentations, following FUNDECOR’s primary fields of focus, to inform, guide, and encourage certification. FUNDECOR has already begun implementing our tools with clients.
I primarily worked on the carbon footprint calculator portions of this project, as well as of course my fair share of the writing. In particular I completed huge swaths of research focused on establishing accurate carbon footprint calculation constants, localized specifically to reflect Costa Rica's location and status quo. While the primary link listed is to the project paper, links to various formats of the calculators have been placed in the appendix thereof. This project was one of the most formative I've participated in, special thanks to advisors Kim Holland, and Jim Chiarelli, as well as our FUNDECOR point of contact, Federico Varela Mora. Pura Vida!
